Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres come from troubled backgrounds. B'Elanna dealt with argumentative parents, a Klingon mother and a human father, not suited to one another. After several years of an attempt at marriage and family life her father, John Torres, abandoned B'Elanna and her mother Miral. This left B'Elanna with an overbearing Klingon mother and abandonment issues of her own to deal with.

Tom Paris was destined to be 'the golden child' of Admiral Owen Paris. High standards were set for Tom. He often didn't meet them and was a disappointment to his father. The ultimate family upset came when Tom was involved and blamed for a crash that resulted in the deaths of others, landing him in a federation prison.

After years had passed Tom and B'Elanna both ended up on the Starship Voyager stranded an estimated 75 years away from home. They meet, clash, and eventually fall in love. Along the way many of their issues come to light as they learn to trust one another. B'Elanna gets the chance to start a resolution process with her parents. Tom doesn't get that chance, at least that we see... Tom and B'Elanna do marry and do have a child. It brings up her abandonment issues again, yet Tom is able to prove to her he isn't going anywhere.

This is the journey of two people from broken pasts that join and create a new and hopeful future together.
